UCI Infectious Disease Science Initiative presents

Colliding Epidemics: Trends in Major Infectious Diseases in the Time of COVID-19

This virtual symposium will include presentations by leading experts on the global trends and dynamics of major infectious diseases during the COVID pandemic, including HIVHCVtuberculosis, and influenza.

November 2, 2021 | 9 – 11 a.m.

Attendees can also watch the symposium livestream on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYofxyPHisI

Speakers in order of presenting include:

Tetyana VasylyevaTetyana Vasylyeva, D.Phil, Assistant Professor, Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Health, University of California, San Diego

Title: HIV and Hepatitis C Virus in internally-displaced people who inject drugs in the presence of COVID-19 challenges in Ukraine

Bio: Tetyana Vasylyeva received her D.Phil in Molecular Epidemiology from the University of Oxford, where she studied applications of HIV molecular epidemiology to public health. Her work is focused on combining various approaches, such as phylodynamics and epidemiological modelling, to describe the spread of viral infections in a population and assess different prevention strategies, particularly as applied to hard-to-reach and vulnerable populations, such as people who inject drugs and forced migrants.

Finn McQuaidFinn McQuaid, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

Title: Trends in tuberculosis incidence during the COVID-19 pandemic

Bio: Finn McQuaid is a mathematical modeller with experience in modelling infectious diseases in a range of settings. He is currently the TB Modelling and Analysis Consortium Secretariat Epidemiologist, responsible for developing guidance and resources for country-level TB modelling to support decision-making, and facilitating coordination between international funders and stakeholders. He is a member of the LSHTM TB Modelling Group, researching drug-resistant tuberculosis, treatment adherence and the impact of COVID-19 on TB. He is currently co-director of the LSHTM TB Centre.

Shweta BansalShweta Bansal, Ph.D., Provost’s Distinguished Associate Professor of Biology, Georgetown University

Title: Double trouble? When a pandemic and seasonal respiratory virus collide

Bio: Shweta Bansal specializes in modeling for infectious diseases. She is trained as an interdisciplinary applied mathematician and disease ecologist from the University of Texas at Austin, and was a fellow of the prestigious RAPIDD Postdoctoral Program (of the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the Department of Homeland Security). At Georgetown University, she leads a research group that develops data-driven mathematical models at the interface of social behavior and infectious disease dynamics using tools from network science, statistical physics, computer science and statistics.

After presentations, there will be a panel discussion.

UCI and UCI Health have implemented measures to protect our community and this virtual symposium is meant to share trends in the major infectious diseases in the time of the virus. This event is open to the public and UCI faculty, students and staff are encouraged to attend.
