We are pleased to announce that Kyriacos A. Athanasiou, Henry Samueli Chair in Engineering and Distinguished Professor of biomedical engineering, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. He is one of 90 U.S.-based members and 10 international members announced this week.

A globally renowned biomedical engineer, he is being honored “for inventing, developing, and translating technologies, such as articular cartilage implants and methods for intraosseous infusion, that impact several biomedical fields, including orthopedics, maxillofacial surgery, tissue engineering, diabetes, and emergency care,” according to the NAM citation.

Professor Athanasiou serves as the head of DELTAi, Driving Engineering & Life-science Translational Advances @ Irvine. He has been inducted to the National Academy of Inventors. He is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering; and the Biomedical Engineering Society, of which he was president.

UCI now has six faculty who are members of the National Academy of Medicine, which is one of the highest professional distinctions accorded to those contributing to the areas of medical sciences, healthcare and public health. This notable accomplishment illustrates the academic excellence of the UCI faculty, which now includes 44 members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine; 34 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; 10 members of the National Academy of Inventors; and five members of the National Academy of Education.
