I am writing to share that we will soon launch a national search for the Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate Division position. We have engaged the nationally recognized academic search consultant Isaacson, Miller to support this recruitment. An advisory committee charged with assisting in the national search will be formed in the coming weeks.
I am pleased to report that Jaymi Lee Smith, Professor of Lighting Design in the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, has agreed to continue serving as Interim Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Interim Dean of the Graduate Division for the 2025-26 academic year. While Professor Smith looks forward to returning to her academic pursuits, we appreciate her willingness to extend her service during this expanded search.
A valued member of the UC Irvine faculty since 2007, Professor Smith has provided leadership during a period of significant transition. Over the past year, she helped the Graduate Division ensure continuity and advance key strategic priorities. Under her leadership, the Division has expanded student-centered programming, launched summer research initiatives, and enhanced advising, career development and mentoring opportunities. Professor Smith's guidance has been especially critical in navigating fiscal challenges while reinforcing the university's commitment to graduate student support and success. Please join me in thanking Professor Smith for her continued leadership in this important role.
