Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Gillian Hayes has been appointed as Vice Provost for Academic Personnel, effective July 1, 2024.

A member of the UC Irvine faculty since 2007, she has served as Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate Division since 2019. In this role, Vice Provost Hayes was praised for consistently demonstrating an open communication style and approachability that fosters an environment where stakeholders feel heard and supported. She has been responsible for academic policies for all graduate students as well as development and implementation of programs to support student success, time to degree and positive career outcomes. Under her leadership, the graduate division managed admissions for a record number of more than 22,000 applicants per year, across all schools, including substantial increases in admission of under-represented groups. In cooperation with other campus leaders, Vice Provost Hayes has been responsible for external relations and fundraising for graduate fellowships campuswide, including increasing fellowship fundraising by $22M.

Vice Provost Hayes is the Robert A. and Barbara L. Kleist chair in Informatics in the Donald Bren School of Information & Computer Sciences, with additional appointments in UCI's School of Education and School of Medicine. Her research interests involve a range of disciplines and a focus on leveraging innovative information technologies to support vulnerable populations.

I am grateful to the search committee and its chair, Roxane Cohen Silver, Vice Provost, Institutional Research, Assessment, and Planning, and Distinguished Professor of Psychological Science, Medicine, and Public Health, for their commitment and contributions to the search process. Please join me in congratulating Vice Provost Hayes on her new role.

Interim leadership for the Graduate Division will be announced shortly.
