Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that Jan Hirsch has been reappointed to an additional five-year term as Dean of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

This decision follows a thorough review, which included materials submitted by Dean Hirsch and feedback from faculty, staff, fellow deans and community colleagues. We are grateful to the review committee for their efforts throughout the review process.

Under Dean Hirsch’s leadership, UCI established the first public pharmacy school in the Los Angeles and Orange County region. The School was approved by the Board of Regents in the summer of 2020. As part of developing the School, the Department of Clinical Pharmacy Practice was created and now has 15 faculty.

During her tenure, the School recruited diverse faculty (now including 12% faculty from underrepresented groups and 46% female faculty), expanded staff hiring, increased student enrollment in the M.S. in pharmacology and Ph.D. in pharmacological sciences, and launched the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. The PharmD program now enrolls 90 students and is on track to receive accreditation after the first class graduates in 2025. In 2021-22, the School grew extramural research funding to $9.4 million and philanthropic support to $1.6 million. The faculty and staff of the School made noteworthy contributions to the campus community during the pandemic, partnering with the UCI Medical Center Pharmacy Department to support the Bren Events Center vaccination site.

In addition to her service at UCI, Dean Hirsch served on the University of California Population Health Pharmacy Workgroup from 2019-2020 and on the UC Health Special Committee on Health Sciences and Clinical Affairs since 2021. She is a member of the American Pharmacists Association, a distinguished fellow of the Get the Medications Right Institute, and a research fellow and chair of the annual meeting evaluation committee of the National Academies of Practice in Pharmacy. For the past 15 years, she has served as chair and co-chair of the Applied Pharmacoeconomic and Outcomes Research Steering Committee.

Please join us in congratulating Dean Hirsch on her reappointment and for her contributions to UCI.

Sincerely,
