Noted author Brit Bennett joins the UCI Great Big Read at 12 p.m.-12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, July 13, to discuss her powerhouse novel, The Vanishing Half. This virtual event is free and open to registering UCI students, faculty, staff, and community members.

With novels that have topped The New York Times best-seller lists, Brit Bennett has shared complex family narratives in her books The Mothers (2016) and The Vanishing Half (2020), with the latter selected as one of The New York Times 10 best books of 2020 and longlisted for a National Book Award. The Southern California writer joins the UCI Great Big Read to discuss themes from her novel The Vanishing Half, which is the current UCI summer reading selection. The conversation is facilitated by Assistant Professor Sandra Harvey from the Department of African American Studies.

The UCI Great Big Read is sponsored by the Office of Inclusive Excellence, UCI Libraries, and Division of Student Affairs. This University-wide program provides a forum for discussion about exceptional literature promoting inclusive excellence. The program aims to foster engagement and social solidarity among UCI members and the public during a time when we are practicing physical distancing due to the current pandemic.
