David Gibbons Appointed Interim Chief Innovation Officer and Executive Director of Beall Applied Innovation

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of Chancellor Gillman, I am pleased to announce that David Gibbons has been named interim chief innovation officer and executive director for UCI Beall Applied Innovation, effective April 1, 2021.

David has an extensive background in business development and commercialization of diverse technology portfolios. He joined UCI in 2020 as director of industry-sponsored research at Beall Applied Innovation. In this role, he worked to support Orange County’s research infrastructure and economic growth by establishing and maintaining industry relationships with a focus on developing best practices for managing the multiple interactions between UCI and its industry partners. He also serves on UCI’s Conflict of Interest Committee, Health Data Governance Committee and Cannabis Research Committee.

Before joining UCI, he served more than 18 years in technology transfer at UC San Diego in the Office of Innovation and Commercialization as associate director and a range of other management roles. Before UCSD, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy where he oversaw a portfolio of healthcare construction projects throughout the Pacific Rim region.

David’s leadership role will continue until a permanent chief innovation officer and executive director is appointed. A national search is currently underway.
