UCI students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to join the UCI Great Big Read with Tommy Orange from 12-1 p.m. on December 3. Mr. Orange’s novel “There There” is the current program selection for reading.
Since its debut in 2018, “There There” has been critically acclaimed for its multi-faceted characters and sensitive storytelling to confront the current representations and historical treatment of indigenous peoples in the United States. Mr. Orange received several prestigious accolades for this novel, including a PEN/Hemingway Award which honors the book as a major first novel, a National Book Critics Circle John Leonard Prize for outstanding first book in any genre, and a Center for Fiction First Novel Prize.
At the UCI event, Mr. Orange will provide a brief reading before discussing the book’s meaning today, with conversation and Q&A facilitated by Alicia Carroll, Assistant Professor, Comparative Literature.
The UCI Great Big Read is sponsored by the Office of Inclusive Excellence, UCI Libraries, and Division of Student Affairs. This university-wide program provides a forum for discussion about exceptional literature promoting inclusive excellence. The program aims to foster engagement and social solidarity among UCI members and the public during a time when we are practicing physical distancing due to the current pandemic.
