May 7, 2019

Dear colleagues,

Nominations are now being accepted for the Chancellor’s Distinguished Speaker Series for the academic years 2019-20 and 2020-21.

The Chancellor’s Distinguished Speaker Series is intended to support short-term campus visits by distinguished scholars or other influential people from nonacademic professions who will enrich university life through their contact with students, faculty and the local community. The series seeks to include speakers at all stages of their careers and serves to:

  • Raise the visibility and influence of UCI in California and nationwide
  • Enhance the breadth and diversity of intellectual and cultural life on campus
  • Engage the local community around an interesting and relevant topic
  • Show distinguished visitors some of the intellectual life at UCI

Nominees for this series should be people of national and international stature and influence who will bring distinction to the university through their public lectures as well as through papers, seminars and other organized activities for more specialized audiences. Nominators should keep the general audience in mind when planning events for the proposed speaker, which will include at least one large public lecture or performance and a reception or other social event.

Chancellor’s Distinguished Speaker Series events will be managed by the school sponsoring the nominee, in collaboration with the Office of Academic Planning and the Office of Special Events & Protocol and in accordance with campus policies, procedures and protocols for special events.

Nomination Procedures and Selection

Nominations may be submitted by individuals or collectively by a department or other academic unit, but all nominations must be forwarded through the dean of the appropriate school. Nominators must contact nominees to confirm their willingness to participate in the Chancellor’s Distinguished Speaker Series and obtain potential dates of availability. This confirmation is a required component of the nomination form. Please note that the timespan of proposed nominee visits has been expanded to two years (fall 2019 through spring 2021). This recognizes that some distinguished nominees have schedules that are booked beyond one year.

Nominations should be submitted to the dean of your school by June 28, 2019.

Deans will rank the nominations and forward them to the Office of Academic Planning by July 31, 2019. (Please send packets to andreapb@uci.edu.) The rankings should be based on the qualifications of the nominees based on the points noted above, the activities planned for the visit, and the potential impact of the visit on the campus and community.

A committee will review the nominations and submit recommendations to the chancellor.

Nomination packets should include:

  1. Curriculum vitae, résumé or statement summarizing the nominee’s background and area of expertise
  2. Completed nomination form, including all anticipated expenses
  3. Any additional relevant information

Please direct questions about this process to andreapb@uci.edu.

Sincerely,

Enrique J. Lavernia, Ph.D.
Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
Distinguished Professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering
