Introduction for Provost Lavernia (full length)
Enrique J. Lavernia, Ph.D., became provost and executive vice chancellor of UC Irvine on July 1, 2015. As provost, he serves as the chief academic and operating officer, responsible for the creation and implementation of the academic priorities for the university and the allocation of resources that maintain those priorities. The provost is committed to the growth and livelihood of student success and oversees all academic and support units, including UCI’s five vice chancellors and 13 schools, as well as the university librarian, the medical center CEO and the Academic Senate leadership.
A nationally renowned researcher and author, Lavernia is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and maintains an active, laboratory-based research program. He has been published in more than 500 journals and 200 conference publications on topics ranging from nanomaterials to aluminum alloys. He was named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in 2016 and was awarded ASM International’s 2013 Edward DeMille Campbell Memorial Lectureship and 2013 Gold Medal. In 2011, he received a Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Award and the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos & Native Americans in Science Distinguished Scientist Award.
Lavernia began his distinguished career at UCI in 1987 as an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, eventually becoming chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering & Materials Science and a Chancellor’s Professor. In 2002, he left for UC Davis, serving as dean of the College of Engineering and the campus’s interim provost. During his tenure as dean, the college evolved into one of the nation’s fastest-growing and most prestigious engineering schools.
Born in Cuba and raised in Puerto Rico, Lavernia earned a bachelor’s degree in solid mechanics at Brown University and then a master’s in metallurgy and a doctorate in materials engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
