Dear colleagues,
As the calendar hits June, we celebrate the year's achievements and look forward to academic year 2021-22 and resuming in-person activities. Let me begin by expressing my appreciation and gratitude for the support and encouragement I have received from colleagues across campus during this past year. I am excited to have the opportunity to continue working with all of you.
I would like to take the occasion of this newsletter to congratulate all of this year's graduates. They have persevered through a most challenging period to complete their degrees. We are currently planning for Fall 2021 and looking forward to having the large majority of our students back on campus. Please remember that vaccination rates will play a key role in determining our ability to transition to more in-person activities. All UCI community members are encouraged to get vaccinated.
Spring is a time when many academic awards are given. I am delighted that we have a new Guggenheim Fellow, Adriana Darielle Mejía Briscoe; an Andrew Carnegie Fellow, Adria L. Imada; and a new fellow of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, Judith Kroll, among other accolades. We have also celebrated teaching and mentorship in our community, excellence in inclusive scholarship and Latinx/Hispanic leadership. You can read more about these achievements below.
I am thrilled to welcome scholar and leader Magnus Egerstedt, who will join us in July as the new dean of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering. I would also like to recognize Kian Colestock on being named associate vice chancellor and chief information officer.
Of course, the summer is a traditional time for vacations. I sincerely hope that you all have the opportunity to take some time away this summer. You have earned it!
With best wishes,
Hal Stern
