Dear campus community,

I am pleased to announce a new interview series as part of UCI's Black Thriving Initiative.

Led by literary journalism majors and talented storytellers Sydney Charles and Tatum Larsen, "The Welcome Table with Sydney and Tatum" is a video interview series spotlighting UCI's Black faculty, students, staff and alumni. The series launched in the School of Humanities last summer and highlighted fourteen scholars, staff and alumni with humanities affiliations.

Earlier this month, the series won a Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VII gold award in the Communications Pivot category. The category recognizes initiatives that responded especially effectively and creatively to the events of 2020. In the case of "The Welcome Table," the deep relationship between the COVID-19 situation and issues of inequality and racial justice. The judges called it "a deeply thoughtful and compelling project that other colleges and universities can look to in order to amplify the voices of underrepresented students, alumni, faculty and staff." This winter and spring, the series will expand in scope to include interviewees from the entire campus.

I was pleased to be the first interviewee in the newly expanded series, which you can watch below:
