Fall 2020 Newsletter |
Dear colleagues,
The year 2020 continues to provide us with challenges. We have navigated nearby wildfires and a tumultuous election season this fall on top of the continuing challenge of remote operations. I continue to appreciate the adaptability, resilience and innovation demonstrated by our students, faculty and staff during these challenging times.
Our faculty continue to inspire and excel. Notably, Kyriacos A. Athanasiou, Henry Samueli Chair in Engineering and Distinguished Professor of biomedical engineering, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Numerous other faculty have received accolades from associations in their own fields, from law to engineering. In addition, UCI researchers continue to have an impact through published findings and extramural funding. Our colleagues in the Arts continue to adapt to the new environment with a series of online offerings. A perfect example is the delightful "A Midsummer Night's Zoom," which I highly recommend.
Together, we are making efforts to better support our diverse community. Please consider joining the Take the Pledge campaign as part of the UCI Black Thriving Initiative. In addition, the new First Things First project enables first generation students, under the mentorship of faculty, to connect and support one another in an online format.
Thank you for all of your hard work. I hope that you have a productive remainder of the quarter and restful holiday season. Please stay safe.
Sincerely,
Hal S. Stern, Ph.D.
Interim Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor

For Your Weekend Viewing
While the intimate summertime space of the New Swan Theater was surely missed on campus this year, a creative collaboration of Eli Simon, Chancellor's Professor of drama and artistic director of the New Swan Shakespeare Center, and Julia Lupton, professor of English and co-director of the New Swan Shakespeare Center, reimagined "A Midsummer Night's Dream," for live streaming and community interaction on Zoom. You can still catch a replay of the cleverly conceived and incredibly innovative production on YouTube.
