I am delighted to announce that Svetlana Jitomirskaya, professor of mathematics, has been named a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honorary societies. Fellows are nominated and elected to the academy by current members.
Professor Jitomirskaya is a leading expert in mathematical physics and dynamical systems. Her work involves the rigorous study of equations of quantum mechanics and related purely mathematical questions. Born in Ukraine, she earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees at Moscow State University. She came to UCI in 1991 as a part-time lecturer and was appointed to a full professorship in 2000.
UCI now has 36 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Professor Jitomirskaya will be officially inducted along with more than 200 other new members in an October ceremony in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Please join me in congratulating Professor Jitomirskaya on this prestigious recognition of her contributions to her discipline.
