UCI Office of the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor

Dear colleagues,

Welcome to the start of the 2017-18 academic year! As provost and Academic Senate chair, we are committed to working with you in fulfilling UCI’s teaching, research and service mission and realizing the academic priorities of our institution.

Thanks to your efforts, extramural research awards to UCI have increased 29 percent over the past two years, to a campus total of $378.1 million. Graduate student enrollment has also increased. The numbers of new Ph.D. and master’s students arriving on campus this fall are about 15 percent and 27 percent higher than last year, respectively.

UCI is growing physically as well. The Anteater Learning Pavilion will open next year, adding two lecture halls, 10 classrooms and two computer labs designed for active learning pedagogy. The Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building, recently approved by the regents, will add 181,000 gross square feet of research and teaching laboratories, seminar rooms, offices and collaborative spaces. Construction is expected to be completed in 2019-20.

Last month, Chancellor Gillman announced a $200 million naming gift from Susan and Henry Samueli to support the UCI College of Health Sciences, including $50 million for a new building and $145 million for an endowment that will support up to 15 faculty chairs. The administration and the Academic Senate will be working closely together to help make the College of Health Sciences a leader in research, teaching and delivery of healthcare.

Combined with other funding sources, gifts like this will help us meet our multiyear goal – established in the campus’s 2015 strategic plan – of adding 250 net new faculty positions. We have already hired 76 in the last two years and expect another 67 to be recruited this year.

We are grateful for your dedication, and we look forward to working with you to accomplish our goals. Now more than ever, the world needs our rigorous commitment to the pursuit and transmittal of truth in an inclusive community.
