Faculty Hiring for Leveraged Research Excellence (FHLRE) is a faculty hiring program aimed at further elevating UCI’s research excellence by strategically leveraging current and past investments. 

In the last several years, the campus has invested in substantial resources – advanced and unique equipment, facilities, space, and people – in research centers, institutes, and equivalent organizations. The goal of this program is to catalyze and enable the addition of new faculty whose expertise, background, and research directions are synergistic UCI’s centers and institutes.  

All new faculty members hired with the help of this program will have their academic appointments in academic departments. This will serve to expand and strengthen ties between centers/institutes and schools/departments and create new opportunities for our current faculty to engage in innovative, multidisciplinary scholarship.

All recruitments will be conducted in the context of inclusive excellence.

Proposals should be submitted to the Office of Academic Planning at acadplan@uci.edu by Monday, November 7, 2016.

Proposals are invited from directors of centers or institutes or equivalent organizations and involve collaboration with one or more deans, department chairs, and relevant interested faculty.

The most competitive proposals will address the following criteria:

    • Align with the campus strategic plan and the significance of the opportunity
    • Enhance collaborative, multidisciplinary research and scholarship
    • Leverage resources from existing centers/institutes/ORUs and school/departments
    • Contribute to inclusive excellence
    • Have a plan of coordination between schools/departments and Centers/Institutes/ORUs

Typical proposals will be for 1-3 new faculty hires. There is no required format for the proposals, however, it should contain the following elements:

      1. Proposed faculty hiring plan. This section (not exceeding 5 pages) should include: (1) how the proposed faculty recruitment will advance UCI research activities and excellence; (2) how current infrastructure and resources will be leveraged (how the new faculty will use the resources; collaborate with existing faculty, contribute to other parts of the campus research enterprise); (3) plan for inclusive excellence; and (4) the following details on potential faculty hires:
        1. the areas of research expertise, ideal profiles, and backgrounds of new faculty to be recruited (it is not necessary to identify and name the faculty to be recruited);
        2. the professorial level anticipated (assistant, associate, full);
        3. potential academic home departments and interest on the part of the departments;
        4. realistic estimates of salaries, start-up costs, space and facility needs, additional special equipment and the proposed center/institute/ORU contribution towards these.
      2. Letter(s) from one or more Schools' Deans and Department Chairs on the roles new faculty will play in their units, how they fit with their strategic plans, and how they will contribute to elevating their departments and schools. 

Review Process

All proposals will be reviewed in three steps:

Step 1: Vice Chancellor for Research will appoint a committee with representation from faculty, department chairs, and deans to review all applications and forward analysis of strengths and weaknesses, and ranked list of applications based on:

  1. Alignment with the campus strategic plan and the significance of the opportunity
  2. Ability to enhance collaborative, multidisciplinary scholarship
  3. Effective leveraging of existing center/institute resources

Step 2: A committee of three vice provosts (Academic Personnel, Academic Planning, Inclusive Excellence) and two senate-nominated members will review and forward ranked list of applications based on:

  1. Outcomes of Step 1 above
  2. Contributions to inclusive excellence
  3. Compelling plan of coordination between schools/depts. and centers/institutes/ORUs

Step 3: Provost and Vice Chancellor for Research will review recommendation and make final decisions.
